Plant Description

Description

Viburnum tinus, commonly known as Laurustinus, is a hardy evergreen shrub valued for its glossy, dark green leaves and clusters of delicate white to pale pink flowers. Its pink flower buds develop during autumn before opening throughout winter and early spring, providing colour when many other garden plants are dormant. Its dense growth makes it suitable for hedging, borders, screening and large outdoor containers.

💧

WATER

Moderate watering. Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a strong root system. Once established, Viburnum tinus is relatively drought tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods. Container-grown plants require more frequent watering, particularly during warmer weather.

🌱

SOIL

Moist but well-draining garden soil enriched with organic matter. Adapts well to most soil types.

REPOT

If grown in large containers, refresh compost every 2–3 years. Garden plants generally do not require repotting.

JOE'S TOP TIP

Plant Viburnum tinus in full sun or partial shade to encourage healthy growth and reliable winter flowering. It works particularly well as an evergreen hedge or screening shrub. Prune lightly after flowering in spring to maintain its shape. Avoid heavy pruning during autumn, as this can remove developing flower buds. Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base during spring to help retain moisture and improve soil conditions.

⚠️

COMMON MISTAKE

Pruning during autumn or early winter. Viburnum tinus develops its flower buds before winter, so pruning at this time can remove the buds and significantly reduce flowering. Avoid planting in permanently waterlogged soil, particularly during winter.

PLANT FACT

Viburnum tinus is particularly valuable because it flowers during winter and early spring, providing nectar for pollinators active during milder weather. After flowering, it can produce attractive metallic blue-black berries, which are eaten by some birds. Its evergreen foliage also provides shelter for wildlife throughout the year.
