Description

Curio rowleyanus (formerly Senecio rowleyanus), commonly known as String of Pearls, is a distinctive trailing succulent with long, slender stems covered in small, round, bead-like leaves. Its unusual foliage resembles strings of green pearls, making it ideal for hanging pots, shelves and sunny windowsills where its stems can cascade naturally.

PLANT CARE

Everything you need to know to keep your plant happy and thriving.

☀️

LIGHT

Bright Light

💧

WATER

Low watering. Allow the compost to dry out completely between waterings, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. The round leaves store water, allowing the plant to tolerate dry periods. Reduce watering considerably during winter.

🌱

SOIL

Very free-draining cactus and succulent compost with added perlite, pumice or horticultural grit. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot.

🪴

REPOT

Repot approximately every 2–3 years, preferably during spring, or when the plant becomes noticeably rootbound. Use a shallow pot with drainage holes and handle the delicate trailing stems carefully.

JOE'S TOP TIP

Position your String of Pearls somewhere with plenty of bright light, including some gentle direct morning or evening sunlight. Make sure light reaches the top of the pot as well as the trailing stems to prevent the crown from becoming sparse.

⚠️

COMMON MISTAKE

Overwatering or placing the plant in insufficient light. String of Pearls is particularly vulnerable to root and stem rot when grown in constantly damp compost. Always check that the compost has dried before watering again.

PLANT FACT

Each pearl is a modified leaf designed to store water. The leaves also have a small translucent strip, often called a leaf window, which allows light to penetrate further into the leaf for photosynthesis. String of Pearls can also produce small white flowers with a sweet, cinnamon-like fragrance when grown in suitable conditions.

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN
