Plant Description
Description
Selenicereus wercklei, commonly known as Werckle’s Moonlight Cactus, is an unusual tropical cactus with long, trailing or climbing stems that make it ideal for hanging pots and elevated shelves. Unlike traditional desert cacti, it naturally grows in humid tropical forests, where it climbs through trees and produces impressive nocturnal flowers when mature.
PLANT CARE
Everything you need to know to keep your plant happy and thriving.
LIGHT
Medium Light
WATER
Moderate watering. Allow the upper section of compost to dry slightly between waterings, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. Keep slightly more moist during spring and summer and reduce watering during winter.
SOIL
Free-draining epiphytic cactus mix containing houseplant compost, orchid bark and perlite. It needs more moisture retention than a traditional desert cactus mix while still requiring excellent drainage.
REPOT
Repot every 2–3 years in spring or when noticeably rootbound. Move up only one pot size at a time and use a container with good drainage.

JOE'S TOP TIP
Treat this more like a tropical jungle cactus than a desert cactus. Give it bright, indirect light, good humidity and more regular watering than traditional cacti. Allow the stems to trail naturally from a hanging pot or provide support if you prefer a climbing plant.
COMMON MISTAKE
Keeping it extremely dry because it's a cactus. Selenicereus naturally grows in tropical environments and appreciates more consistent moisture than desert species. However, permanently wet compost can still cause root rot.
WHEN TO COME BACK TO US
Bring it back (or a photo) in 6–8 weeks if you want: • Repotting advice • Help encouraging healthy trailing growth • Flowering advice • Propagation advice • A general plant health check
PLANT FACT
Selenicereus species are often called Moonlight Cacti because many produce spectacular flowers that open during the evening or at night. The flowers are adapted to attract nocturnal pollinators such as moths and bats.
