Plant Description

Description

Phlebodium aureum ‘Davana’, commonly known as the Blue Star Fern, is a distinctive tropical fern with soft, wavy blue-green fronds and a naturally relaxed, arching growth habit. More forgiving than many traditional ferns, it's an excellent choice for adding texture and colour to bright indoor spaces while being easier to care for than most of its fern relatives.

PLANT CARE

Everything you need to know to keep your plant happy and thriving.

☀️

LIGHT

💧

WATER

Moderate watering. Allow the top few centimetres of compost to dry slightly between waterings. Keep the soil lightly moist but never waterlogged. Unlike many ferns, the Blue Star Fern is more tolerant of occasional drying out.

🌱

SOIL

Free-draining houseplant compost with added orchid bark and perlite to provide good drainage while retaining light moisture.

🪴

REPOT

Repot every 2–3 years in spring or when rootbound. Move up one pot size only. Avoid burying the thick, furry rhizomes, which naturally grow along the surface of the compost.

JOE'S TOP TIP

Keep the fuzzy rhizomes exposed rather than covering them with compost. Bright, indirect light helps maintain the beautiful blue-green foliage, and an occasional mist or naturally humid room will keep the fronds looking their best.

⚠️

COMMON MISTAKE

Most people struggle with this fern by overwatering or burying the surface rhizomes during repotting, which can lead to rot.

📅

WHEN TO COME BACK TO US

Bring it back (or a photo) in 6–8 weeks if you want: • Repotting advice • Help caring for the surface rhizomes • A general plant health check

🌿

PLANT FACT

The thick, furry rhizomes creep across the surface of the compost and help the plant store water and nutrients. In the wild, the Blue Star Fern often grows high on tree branches as an epiphyte rather than in the ground.
