Water
Moderate watering. Allow the top few centimetres of compost to dry slightly between waterings. Keep the compost lightly moist during active growth but never waterlogged. Reduce watering considerably during winter when growth slows.
Soil
Free-draining aroid mix made from houseplant compost, orchid bark, perlite, and a little horticultural charcoal. Good airflow around the roots is particularly important for Alocasias.
Repot
Repot every 1–2 years in spring or when noticeably rootbound. Move up only one pot size at a time, as an oversized pot can hold too much moisture around the roots.

💡 Joe's Top Tip
Keep your Silver Dragon somewhere warm, humid, and bright without harsh direct sunlight. Avoid cold draughts and sudden temperature changes. Check the undersides of the leaves regularly too, as Alocasias can be particularly attractive to spider mites.
⚠️ Common Mistake
Overwatering is one of the quickest ways to lose an Alocasia. They enjoy moisture but don't want permanently wet compost. The combination of wet roots and cool temperatures is particularly troublesome.

🌿 Plant Fact
The incredible metallic appearance isn't actually silver pigment. The structure and colouring of the leaf surface create the distinctive silvery effect, with the deeply recessed veins making the foliage look almost dragon-scaled.
