Description
Philodendron ‘Birkin’, commonly known as the Birkin Philodendron, is a compact tropical houseplant known for its glossy dark green leaves decorated with fine creamy-white pinstripes. Each new leaf can develop a slightly different pattern, giving the plant plenty of character as it matures. Its upright, self-heading growth makes it ideal for desks, shelves and smaller indoor spaces.

LIGHT

WATER
Moderate watering. Allow the top few centimetres of compost to dry between waterings, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. Reduce watering during winter when growth slows.
SOIL
Free-draining aroid mix containing houseplant compost, orchid bark and perlite. This provides moisture retention while maintaining good airflow around the roots.
REPOT
Repot every 1–2 years in spring or when noticeably rootbound. Move up only one pot size at a time and always use a container with adequate drainage.

JOE'S TOP TIP
Give your Birkin plenty of bright, indirect light to encourage strong white pinstriping. It will tolerate medium light, but the variegation may become less pronounced. Rotate the pot occasionally to encourage balanced growth.
COMMON MISTAKE
Keeping it somewhere too dark or overwatering it. Lower light can reduce the distinctive white markings, while constantly wet compost can lead to yellowing leaves and root rot.

PLANT FACT
Philodendron ‘Birkin’ originated as a mutation of Philodendron ‘Rojo Congo’. Because its variegation isn't completely stable, some plants can occasionally produce leaves with unusual colouring or partially revert towards their darker-leaved origins.
