Plant Description
Description
Hypoestes phyllostachya ‘Gem’, commonly known as the Polka Dot Plant, is a compact tropical houseplant grown for its colourful, patterned foliage. Its small leaves feature attractive splashes of pink, red or white against a green background, depending on the variety. Its bushy growth habit makes it ideal for desks, shelves, windowsills and terrarium displays.
PLANT CARE
Everything you need to know to keep your plant happy and thriving.
LIGHT
Medium Light
WATER
Moderate watering. Keep the compost lightly moist, allowing the top 1–2cm to dry between waterings. Water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. Avoid allowing the plant to dry out completely, as this can cause the foliage to wilt.
SOIL
Moisture-retentive but free-draining houseplant compost with added perlite. The mixture should retain some moisture while allowing excess water to drain away.
REPOT
Repot approximately every 1–2 years, ideally during spring, or when noticeably rootbound. Move up only one pot size at a time.

JOE'S TOP TIP
Position your Polka Dot Plant somewhere with bright, indirect light to maintain its colourful leaf markings. Pinch out the growing tips regularly to encourage bushier growth and prevent the plant from becoming tall and leggy. Hypoestes also grows well in terrariums due to its preference for warmth and humidity, although regular trimming may be needed.
COMMON MISTAKE
Allowing the compost to dry out completely or keeping the plant in insufficient light. Hypoestes prefers consistent moisture, while low light can cause weak, stretched growth and reduced leaf colour.
WHEN TO COME BACK TO US
Bring it back (or a photo) in 6–8 weeks if you want: • Repotting advice • Pruning and shaping guidance • Propagation advice • Help maintaining colourful foliage • A general plant health check
PLANT FACT
The colourful markings on Hypoestes leaves are created by natural pigments within the foliage. Different cultivated varieties produce pink, red or white patterns, giving the plant its common name, Polka Dot Plant. Hypoestes can also produce small purple or pink flowers, although it is primarily grown for its decorative foliage.
