Plant Description
Description
Hoya burtoniae ‘Variegata’, commonly known as the Variegated Burtoniae Hoya or Variegated Wax Plant, is a trailing tropical houseplant with thick, slightly fuzzy leaves displaying attractive green, cream and yellow variegation. Under brighter light, some leaves may develop pink or reddish tones. Its compact foliage and trailing growth make it ideal for hanging pots, shelves and smaller indoor spaces.
PLANT CARE
Everything you need to know to keep your plant happy and thriving.
LIGHT
Bright Light
WATER
Low to moderate watering. Allow most of the compost to dry between waterings, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. Its thick leaves store moisture, so avoid keeping the roots constantly wet. Reduce watering during winter when growth slows.
SOIL
Very free-draining Hoya mix containing orchid bark, perlite and houseplant compost. The mixture should provide good airflow around the roots while retaining a small amount of moisture.
REPOT
Repot approximately every 2–3 years, ideally during spring, or when the plant becomes noticeably rootbound. Hoyas generally prefer a relatively snug pot, so move up only one pot size at a time.
HUMIDITY
Medium
DIFFICULTY
Beginner
PET FRIENDLY
Yes
JOE'S TOP TIP
Hoya burtoniae is known for its slightly fuzzy foliage and clusters of small, star-shaped flowers. The flowers can produce a sweet fragrance, particularly during warmer conditions. Like many Hoyas, it can flower repeatedly from the same flowering spurs.
COMMON MISTAKE
Overwatering or growing the plant in insufficient light. Variegated Hoyas contain less chlorophyll in their pale leaf sections and generally require brighter conditions than fully green varieties. Constantly wet compost can also lead to root rot.
WHEN TO COME BACK TO US
Bring it back (or a photo) in 6–8 weeks if you want: • Repotting advice • Propagation advice • Help maintaining variegation • Advice on encouraging flowering • A general plant health check
