Plant Description
Description
Helleborus niger ‘Christmas Carol’, commonly known as the Christmas Rose ‘Christmas Carol’, is a hardy evergreen perennial that produces elegant white flowers with golden-yellow centres during winter. Its dark green, leathery foliage provides year-round interest, while its early flowering period makes it ideal for winter containers, shaded borders and seasonal displays.
PLANT CARE
Everything you need to know to keep your plant happy and thriving.
LIGHT
Low Light
WATER
Moderate watering. Keep the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged, particularly while the plant is establishing. Water container-grown plants whenever the upper few centimetres of compost begin to dry. Reduce watering during prolonged wet weather, but check containers regularly during dry winter periods.
SOIL
Fertile, moisture-retentive but free-draining soil with plenty of organic matter. Helleborus niger prefers neutral to slightly alkaline soil. For containers, use a quality peat-free compost with added grit or perlite to improve drainage.
REPOT
Repot container-grown plants approximately every 2–3 years, ideally after flowering or during early autumn. Move up only one pot size at a time and avoid burying the crown too deeply. Established Hellebores generally prefer to remain undisturbed.

JOE'S TOP TIP
Position your Christmas Carol Hellebore somewhere with partial shade and good drainage. Its white flowers are particularly effective in winter containers alongside evergreen foliage plants and other seasonal bedding. Remove damaged or diseased leaves when necessary, but retain healthy evergreen foliage. After flowering, apply a light mulch of well-rotted compost around the plant, keeping it away from the crown.
COMMON MISTAKE
Keeping the plant permanently indoors in a warm room. Christmas Rose is a hardy outdoor plant that requires cool seasonal conditions. Prolonged exposure to central heating can cause flowers to fade prematurely and foliage to deteriorate. Poor drainage and planting the crown too deeply can also affect plant health.
WHEN TO COME BACK TO US

PLANT FACT
Despite its common name, the Christmas Rose is not related to true roses. It belongs to the buttercup family, Ranunculaceae. The large white structures surrounding the yellow centre are actually sepals rather than petals. As the flowers mature, these sepals may develop pink or green tones and remain attractive for several weeks. ‘Christmas Carol’ is a cultivated selection of Helleborus niger, valued for its compact growth and ability to flower during the colder months.
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN
‘Christmas Carol’ is a cultivated variety of Helleborus niger, a species native to mountainous regions of central and southern Europe, particularly the Alps.
