PLANT CARE

Everything you need to know to keep your plant happy and thriving.

☀️

LIGHT

Medium Light

💧

WATER

Moderate watering. Keep the compost lightly moist, allowing the top 1–2cm to dry between waterings. Water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. Avoid allowing the compost to dry out completely or remain constantly waterlogged. Reduce watering slightly during winter when growth slows. Rainwater or filtered water is preferable where tap water is particularly hard.

🌱

SOIL

Moisture-retentive but free-draining houseplant compost containing coco coir, perlite and a small amount of orchid bark. The mixture should retain consistent moisture while allowing good airflow around the roots.

🪴

REPOT

Repot approximately every 1–2 years, preferably during spring, or when noticeably rootbound. Move up only one pot size at a time. Established plants can also be divided during repotting if they have developed several healthy growth points.

JOE'S TOP TIP

Position your Ctenanthe Amagris somewhere with medium to bright indirect light and consistent humidity. Avoid placing it near radiators, cold draughts or frequently opened doors. A bright bathroom can provide suitable growing conditions if there is enough natural light. Keep the compost evenly moist during active growth and avoid sudden changes in temperature.

⚠️

COMMON MISTAKE

Allowing the compost to dry out completely or exposing the plant to strong direct sunlight. Ctenanthe prefers consistent moisture and indirect light. Prolonged dryness can cause curling leaves and brown edges, while intense sunlight can scorch its delicate foliage

PLANT FACT

Ctenanthe belongs to the Marantaceae family, commonly known as the Prayer Plant family. Its leaves can change position throughout the day in response to light levels. This movement is known as nyctinasty, with leaves often becoming more upright during the evening. The distinctive fishbone pattern is a natural feature of its foliage.
