Description
Chlorophytum orchidastrum ‘Fire Flash’, commonly known as the Fire Flash Plant or Mandarin Plant, is a striking relative of the traditional Spider Plant with broad, glossy green leaves and vivid orange stems. Its unusual colouring gives it a bold tropical appearance while its compact growth makes it ideal for shelves, tables and smaller indoor spaces.

WATER
Moderate watering. Allow the top few centimetres of compost to dry slightly between waterings, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. Reduce watering during winter when growth naturally slows.
SOIL
Free-draining houseplant compost with added perlite to improve drainage while retaining enough moisture for healthy growth.
REPOT
Repot every 1–2 years in spring or when noticeably rootbound. Move up only one pot size at a time and always use a pot with adequate drainage.

JOE'S TOP TIP
Give ‘Fire Flash’ plenty of bright, indirect light to keep those incredible orange stems vibrant. Avoid harsh midday sunlight, which can scorch the broad leaves. Keep water out of the centre of the plant where possible and wipe the leaves occasionally to remove dust.
COMMON MISTAKE
Overwatering or leaving the plant sitting in water. Although it appreciates more consistent moisture than a succulent, permanently wet compost can quickly cause root problems.

PLANT FACT
Despite looking completely different, ‘Fire Flash’ is related to the familiar Spider Plant. Instead of producing long striped foliage and dangling plantlets, this species is prized for the brilliant orange petioles that connect its leaves to the centre of the plant.
