💧

Water

Moderate watering. Keep the compost lightly and consistently moist, but never waterlogged. Allow the surface to dry slightly between waterings. Rainwater or filtered water is ideal, as this plant can be sensitive to minerals found in tap water.

🌱

Soil

Moisture-retentive but free-draining houseplant compost with added perlite and orchid bark to provide good drainage and airflow around the roots.

🪴

Repot

Repot every 1–2 years in spring or when noticeably rootbound. Move up only one pot size at a time and avoid disturbing the roots unnecessarily.

💡 Joe's Top Tip

A bright bathroom is one of the best positions for this plant because it provides both indirect light and naturally higher humidity. Keep it away from radiators, cold draughts and harsh direct sunlight. Consistent conditions are more important than constantly fussing with it.

⚠️ Common Mistake

Low humidity and inconsistent watering are the usual problems. Allowing the compost to completely dry out can quickly result in curled leaves and crispy brown edges.

🌿 Plant Fact

The name rufibarba roughly refers to its reddish hairs, describing the fine burgundy-coloured hairs covering the undersides of the leaves and stems. They're what give the plant its distinctive soft, furry texture.
