Description
Alocasia ‘Black Magic’, commonly known as the Black Magic Elephant Ear, is a dramatic tropical plant grown for its large, almost black, heart-shaped leaves. The deep purple-black foliage creates a striking contrast against greener houseplants, making it an impressive statement plant for warm, bright and humid spaces.

LIGHT

WATER
Moderate watering. Keep the compost lightly moist during active growth, allowing the top few centimetres to dry slightly between waterings. Never leave the roots sitting in water and reduce watering considerably during winter.
SOIL
Free-draining aroid mix made from houseplant compost, orchid bark, perlite, and a little horticultural charcoal. Good airflow around the roots is particularly important for Alocasias.
REPOT
Repot every 1–2 years in spring or when noticeably rootbound. Move up only one pot size at a time, as an oversized pot can hold too much moisture around the roots.

JOE'S TOP TIP
Give it plenty of bright, indirect light to maintain the darkest possible foliage. Keep it warm and humid, away from cold draughts. Check underneath the leaves regularly because, like most Alocasias, it can be particularly attractive to spider mites.
COMMON MISTAKE
Keeping the compost permanently wet. Alocasias enjoy consistent moisture but their roots still need oxygen, and waterlogged compost can quickly cause root and corm rot.

PLANT FACT
The extraordinary dark foliage contains high levels of anthocyanin pigments, which mask much of the green chlorophyll and create its characteristic deep purple-black appearance.
