Keeping plants alive honestly comes down to not overthinking it.
A lot of people buy a plant, panic the second one leaf goes yellow, water it every day out of guilt, then accidentally drown it. Plants are a lot tougher than people give them credit for.
Here’s a few simple things that genuinely help:
Don’t Water on a Schedule
One of the biggest mistakes is watering every Sunday just because it’s Sunday. Check the soil first. If it still feels damp a couple of inches down, leave it alone. Most houseplants would rather be a bit too dry than soaking wet.
Think About Light
Plants need the right spot more than anything. A cactus shoved in a dark corner isn’t going to enjoy life much. Same with a fern baking in direct sun all day. Try to match the plant to the room you actually have.
Ignore Perfect Instagram Plants
Real plants lose leaves sometimes. They lean toward windows, get weird growth, and occasionally look a bit scruffy. That’s normal. Don’t compare your plant to a professionally staged photo taken somewhere with perfect lighting and probably three humidifiers hidden behind the camera.
Don’t Rush to Repot Everything
Bigger pot does not always mean happier plant. If a plant is swimming in loads of wet soil with tiny roots, it can actually struggle more. Only size up a little when needed.
Feed During Growing Season
Spring and summer are when most plants properly grow, so giving them some feed every few weeks can really help.
Learn Your Plant
Some plants love loads of light. Some want to dry out completely. Others enjoy humidity. Once you understand what your plant likes, it gets much easier.
And honestly, if you kill a plant, don’t stress too much about it. Nearly everyone who loves plants has accidentally murdered a few along the way. Usually through kindness. Which feels very unfair, really.
