Plant Description

Descrption

Opuntia microdasys, commonly known as the Mickey Mouse Cactus or Bunny Ears Cactus, is a distinctive compact cactus with flattened, oval pads that grow in pairs, giving them their characteristic Mickey Mouse or bunny-ear appearance. Instead of traditional long spines, the pads are covered in clusters of tiny bristles called glochids. Easy to care for and drought tolerant, it’s perfect for sunny windowsills and cactus collections.

Water

Low watering. Allow the compost to dry out completely between waterings. Water thoroughly and allow all excess water to drain away. During winter, water very sparingly.

🌱

Soil

Very free-draining cactus and succulent compost with added grit, pumice or perlite. Excellent drainage is essential.

🪴

Repot

Repot every 2–3 years in spring or when noticeably rootbound. Move up only one pot size and always use a pot with drainage holes.

💡 Joe's Top Tip

Give your Mickey Mouse Cactus the brightest position you have. A sunny windowsill is ideal. Rotate the pot occasionally to encourage even growth and always handle it with thick gloves or tools rather than bare hands.

⚠️ Common Mistake

Overwatering. Like most cacti, it stores water in its fleshy pads and can survive long periods without a drink. Constantly damp compost is far more dangerous than letting it become dry.

🌿 Plant Fact

Those fuzzy-looking dots aren't soft. They're clusters of tiny barbed hairs called glochids, which detach incredibly easily and can irritate the skin.
